Cheryl Mei-ting Schmitz is an Assistant Translator for CCPN Global (UK). She is currently completing her PhD in Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley. Her dissertation explores moral and ethical questions related to the internationalization of Chinese firms through an ethnographic study of Chinese business practices in Angola. She is broadly interested in anthropological approaches to intercultural encounter, the relationship between translation and ethnography, and Chinese globalization.
Cheryl began learning Chinese in 2005, while studying for her undergraduate degree at Tulane University. She went on to spend several years working and studying in China, including one year at Beijing Language and Culture University in 2007-2008, and a summer at the Inter-University Program at Tsinghua in 2011.
Since 2008, Cheryl has worked occasionally as a translator and proofreader (Chinese to English) for academic texts and corporate communications. Most recently, while conducting dissertation research in Angola from 2013-2014, she provided translation and interpretation services between Chinese, English, and Portuguese, for Chinese businesses and their international partners.
Cheryl speaks English, Chinese, and Portuguese, and has a basic knowledge of Spanish.
